FurteanTimes.com is an open furry news network, where users can write whatever they darn well want about the furry world (within the boundaries of the Terms of Service, of course.) Freedom of speech is our prerogative and it's your right to use it or lose it. So, in this world of increasingly censored media, why not use your rights and say what you darn well want?
FurteanTimes.com was originally a fanzine called The Furtean Times (a pun on The Fortean Times - a magazine about the paranormal). The concept was started via the InflatioNation forums in January 2007, where one Tori Belliachi revealed an interest to start an Internet-based magazine for the furry fandom, having previous experience in putting together similar publications in the past. With this, Diesel Leon applied for a role as staff writer, but was offered the then-vacant position of deputy editor by Belliachi. Diesel would only hold this position for two issues, after which he went on extended leave and was eventually replaced by TheChainedWolf, who joined The Furtean Times in Issue 2.
After complaints that Issue 1 was simply a pile of images on a page (making it very hard to use) and the second edition already partially in this format, a new stance was approached - putting content and ease of use ahead of design. However, as time passed, the concepts of design crawled back into the fanzine, with each edition having an individual look and feel to it, usually matching that issue's theme.
The Furtean Times followed this concept with varying success from Issues 3 to 9, which made up the entire September 2007-November 2008 stretch due to various scheduling changes.
In June 2008, The Furtean Times moved from it's long-time home at Sirkain.net to hosting donated by KovuTheHusky, along with a new domain name - FurteanTimes.com - donated by one-time FT contributor Zaishi Mai.
As of August 2008, users are able to enter their articles and contributions directly into the fanzine, without them having to go through Belliachi first. This was further extended with the launch of the new FurteanTimes.com in December, which granted previously unpresidented amounts of freedom for both contributors and readers to influence the site as a whole.
Following the rebranding to FurteanTimes.com, after neatly two years as The Furtean Times, and the change from a closed fanzine to an open furry news network, well... we only just launched, so there's not much to write here.
